If the efficiency of an infrared heater is poor, all hope is lost - consumption is always higher than necessary! Poor is 40%, excellent is 70%. AbegSun achieved 69.5% according to the DIN test certificate.
The size of an infrared radiator is not critical, even at sub-zero temperatures, if it is chosen large enough. Unlike a convection central heating system, oversizing does not result in additional energy consumption, as the radio-controlled radiator switches off automatically once the set comfort temperature has been reached. If it is set large, it switches off correspondingly earlier. The energy costs are the same and the difference in purchase costs with AbegSun is only approx. 30 € per size.
With more power, however, you are on the safe side.
If you are in the radiation angle of a radiator, you will feel a heat of 100°C after just 120 seconds with AbegSun. This is only affected if the airtightness of the room is poor. The cold air flow then also draws into the area of the radiation angle and cools people there. We test such thermal bridges with the infrared camera at the request of our customers.
The light particles of an infrared heater, the photons, move at the speed of light and gradually heat the room evenly. The photons are partly absorbed and partly reflected until all the energy is used up. This means that all areas of a room are gradually heated evenly.
This process can be shortened by setting a base load (base heat), e.g. 18 or 19° Celsius. The overall energy costs only increase slightly as this existing (convective) heat also leads to the heaters being switched off early. However, this is generally necessary at very low outside temperatures.
In order not to lose the advantages of dust-free, healthy indoor air through the use of infrared radiant heating, one must do not follow the excessive legislation in the new Building Energy Act (GEG). After the building has been made airtight with great effort (Blower Door Test), a forced ventilation This negates the benefits of radiant heat and impairs the high air quality achieved in the room. Forced ventilation is harmful to the health of people who are allergic to dust.
If the VOB (Contracting Regulations for the Construction Industry) is agreed for new construction or renovation, the work must be carried out in accordance with the latest technological findings. In this case, the specification in the GEG is ruled out as outdated anyway.
If the building envelope is leaky: instead of a larger or additional radiator, it is better to seal the windows and doors.
